6 Quiz
A quiz is a game or mind sport in which players attempt to answer questions correctly on one subject or on a variety of subjects. It is a test of knowledge, usually held as a competition between individuals or teams. Questions can take many formats: single or multiple choice, fill in the blank, find the word, matching, and picture, audio or video questions.
The objective of a quiz competition is to encourage students to look beyond their textbooks and to connect the theory they have learnt with its applications. Quizzes also reveal gaps in knowledge and highlight areas that need more revision.
In education, a quiz is often a brief form of assessment used to measure growth in knowledge, abilities or skills. Compared with a formal test, a quiz usually has fewer and easier questions and takes less time to complete. A pop quiz is one given without any warning, so that students have no time to prepare.
6.1 Procedure for conducting a quiz
Step 1: Know your audience
Every successful quiz is pitched at the right level for the people taking part. Find out who the participants are (school students, undergraduates, postgraduates or the general public) and what they can reasonably be expected to know.
Step 2: Choose a topic and a title
The title should be attractive, should draw in the intended audience, and should be short and to the point. However good the questions are, a dull title can keep participants away.
Step 3: Frame the questions
Keep the questions short and clear. Avoid long or complicated questions that confuse participants or make them lose interest. Mix easy and difficult questions, and arrange them in rounds of different formats to keep the quiz lively. Check every answer against a reliable source before the event.
Step 4: Plan the scoring and the results
Decide in advance how points will be awarded, whether there will be negative marking, and how ties will be broken. When announcing results, keep the tone positive so that every participant, including those who did not win, leaves feeling encouraged.
Step 5: Follow up
A quiz should lead somewhere: to further reading, a related event, or a chance for participants to learn more about the topic. In online quizzes this is called a call to action, shown to participants along with their results.
Step 6: Make it shareable
Encourage participants to share their experience and results. People share results that make them feel good or smart, so present results in an uplifting way. For online quizzes, a shareable title and attractive results help the quiz reach a wider audience.
The biotechnology quiz BIOTECHWHIZ was conducted as part of SymBIOT: Celebrating Biotech Conclave for school students, undergraduates and postgraduates. In about one page, handwritten, record the details of the quiz: the rounds, the formats of the questions, the subject areas covered, the scoring scheme, and your role in organising or participating.
